E-commerce Limits

Selling a dozen t-shirts is easy on any platform. Managing a multi-region inventory of 5,000 SKUs with dynamic pricing and custom fulfillment logic is where proprietary builders break down.

The Variant Ceiling

A notorious limitation of major hosted commerce platforms is the hard cap on product variants (often restricted to 100 variants and 3 options). If you sell custom furniture with 5 wood types, 10 fabrics, and 3 finishes, you've instantly hit the limit. Circumventing this usually requires expensive third-party apps that inject heavy scripts into your product pages.

Checkout Extensibility

To protect their PCI compliance and transaction fee monopolies, platforms lock down the checkout code. Want to add a custom field for "Delivery Instructions" or run a unique post-purchase upsell script natively? You are often barred unless you upgrade to enterprise plans costing over $2,000 per month.

Data Portability Risks

Customer order histories and tokenized payment gateways are incredibly difficult to migrate. The longer you build your business on a proprietary commerce engine, the higher the ransom becomes to leave it.
